Buoy Repair Crew Buoys Lake Safety

Highly trained Buoy and Hazard Marker Maintenance Crew admire repaired buoys

By Jim McCulley

PECK’S LAKE – On Saturday morning, May 13, an eager group of Peck Lakers answered Clif Wassel’s call for volunteers to repair the lake buoy and hazard markers, and ready them for their summer homes throughout the lake. The PLPA maintains, and with the help of the Pecks, places more than 50 buoys and hazard markers in the lake to keep boaters safe. Just one more reason to join the PLPA and help support the many projects we undertake to make the lake a safer and more enjoyable place.

The maintenance crew was led by John Dackow, who bossed, I mean, directed the efforts of the volunteers to repaint, renumber and repair the buoys and hazard markers – and to organize them for their placement in the lake on May 17 (Wednesday).

Thanks again to all who volunteered, especially to Lake Committee Chair Clif Wassel and to John Dackow, who supplied the tools, the massive brainpower needed to organize the buoy and hazard marker system, and for the sarcasm to keep the maintenance crew motivated. Oh and thanks to Dave B for reminding (aka teaching) me how to tie a bowline knot! I’m sure I was an exasperating student! However, Knot Master John Dackow has promoted me to “Apprentice Knot Expert.”

Thanks also to Dave Bartholomew, Steve Atcheson, Bill Matuszak, Jed Conboy, Rich Coffey, Lou DeCunzo, and Bob Wasiczko who heeded the call for volunteers!
